Junction City’s Jakiron Cook led his team to the brink of back-to-back state championships. Cook finished his career at War Memorial Stadium and earned News-Times/Sports Alley 2019 Football Player of the Year.
The Dragons finished as the 2A state runner-up after claiming the conference championship.
Cook was Junction City’s driving force on both sides of the line of scrimmage.
On offense he had one of the best seasons in school history, finishing with 1,739 yards rushing on 205 carries with 27 touchdowns. He was just as good, if not better, on defense, recording 91 tackles with three interceptions. He was named Hooten’s Magazine 2A Defensive Player of the Year.
“He’s just a good football player,” said Junction City coach Brad Smith. “I think he’s gone to some camps and people put him on a clock. He doesn’t time well. But if you put a football in his hand or he’s chasing one, he doesn’t get caught from behind and he usually does the catching. He’s a game performer. As good a running back as he is, he’s a better defensive back. That doesn’t get a lot of mention. He doesn’t get a lot of picks because the quarterback is told, where is seven, let’s go to the other side of the field. He’s on every special team we have. He’s a great kid. He doesn’t say a whole lot, doesn’t smile a whole lot. But, he’s never in trouble, never misses. He’s a great senior and he’s been a great Dragon.”
Cook rarely left the field and when he did, his absence was noticed. Overall, he might go down as one of the best all-around players in school history. And, at Junction City, that’s saying something.
“Probably on both sides of the football, being able to catch the football, being able to run it, it’s hard to think of any that would be any better,” Smith said. “I don’t know if you can have a better one. The thing about him is his consistency. He was here. He put the old work boots on and came to work every day and did his job.”
