The university continued: “Both major parties want Jamaica to become a republic.
“The difficulty lies in the Jamaican constitution, which has very high thresholds for constitutional change: two thirds majorities in the House of Representatives and the Senate, and any change to the monarchy must also be submitted to a referendum.”
Another nation reportedly eager to become a republic is New Zealand.
Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has previously declared she is in favour of cutting ties with the monarchy.
She told the Times in 2017: “I am a republican.
“It’s certainly not about my view of the monarchy but my view of New Zealand’s place in the world and carving out our own future. So that is what drives my sentiment.”
