Using a deep fryer to cook your holiday dinner? Here are some safety tips - pennlive.com

While this video was originally published ahead of Thanksgiving Day two years ago, the tips still apply.

And with this Christmas looking more and more like it will be dry and relatively mild for late December, the chances are increased that you might be moving outside to cook dinner.

If it’s a turkey, that usually will involve a deep fryer.

The video above shows a fire plume during one of the most dangerous cooking mishaps: a frozen turkey placed inside boiling oil.

In the video, Harrisburg Fire Chief Brian Enterline explains the fire hazard of dropping a frozen turkey into a fryer, immediately thawing and sending water into boiling oil.

He had some other safety tips, including the following:

  • Use fryers outside in the middle of the yard and away from vinyl siding
  • Have a fire extinguisher nearby
  • Make sure the turkey is well thawed and well-drained
  • Make sure the propane line is not rotted
