Powerful Earthquake Strikes Albania - The New York Times

A 6.4-magnitude earthquake struck near the coast of Albania on Tuesday, killing at least one person in what was the country’s strongest earthquake in decades.

A government spokeswoman told Reuters that a person died in Kurbin after panicking and jumping out of a building. It was not immediately known how many people were injured, but a few people were taken to a hospital in Tirana, the capital.

Officials said the worst damage to buildings was in Durres, a port town. Videos posted to social media in the aftermath showed some damaged buildings.

The quake was recorded about six miles northwest of Shijak at 3:54 a.m. local time. Shijak is about 18 miles west of Tirana, a city of nearly 900,000 people, where residents reported feeling the tremors.

The quake struck just two months after dozens of people were injured and hundreds of homes were damaged in the same area after a 5.6-magnitude quake. Officials said that quake, on Sept. 21, had been the strongest to strike the country in 30 years, according to Reuters.
